Apple Watch Cardio Fitness Accuracy
WatchOS 7.2 has updated its fitness monitoring on the Apple Watch and the accuracy of the new cardio fitness is an ‘estimation’ which Apple says is a strong indicator of your overall health.
Once again Apple is proving that the secret sauce is in the software as much as the hardware. The good news is any watch that can use WatchOS 7.2 can benefit from the new heart checking algorithms. Each user will be rated as having “high,” “above average,” “below average,” or “low” cardio fitness. If you are operating with an unfortunate ‘low’ cardio fitness an alert will sound. Never has it been a better time to educate friends, family and importantly grandparents of the this advantageous Apple (accelerator) watch.
How Does the Apple Watch Cardio Fitness Feature Work?
The Apple press release says it works when, “Cardio respiratory fitness, as measured by VO2 max, is the maximum amount of oxygen the body can use during exercise, and it can be increased through physical activity. VO2 max is considered the go-to guage for determining cardiorespiratory health and fitness, existing as a ‘good estimation’ of your overall state of health. Apple Watch already estimates average and higher levels of VO2 max during vigorous outdoor,’ exercise. The benefits are clear; multiple sensors, including the optical heart sensor, GPS, and the accelerator test your ticker without the need for rigorous clinical test with specialized machinery.
Apple has been collating info on users of the health APP on the iPhone for a couple of years but with vague conclusions and the need to put in a a few work outs before you get any answers. The new system means you don’t have to put on a pair of sneakers and break into a jog before getting the lowdown on your heart’s health. The clever Apple takes read outs while the user is walking throughout the day – not only when exercising. This builds an overall picture of the users health.
“American Heart Association science associates low cardio respiratory fitness levels with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. The American Heart Association is focused on helping all people equitably achieve longer, healthier lives, and we believe that emerging technology solutions can empower individuals to manage their own health,” said Nancy Brown, American Heart Association CEO when talking about Apple Watch Cardio Fitness Accuracy.
